Start with a light, breathable base layer — think cotton or linen T-shirt. These natural fabrics help you stay cool when it’s warm. Add a light jacket or cardigan that you can easily take off if the sun comes out but still have on hand if it cools down or rains.

Since afternoon thunderstorms are common, keep a compact, packable rain jacket or a light waterproof shell in your bag. A wide-brimmed hat or cap is really helpful — it protects your face from the high-altitude sun and the rain when it suddenly comes.

Even if it’s cloudy, UV levels can be high in Jozi, so wear sunglasses and apply sunscreen. Lightweight, breathable bottoms (like linen trousers or a flowy skirt) help too — comfortable, but protective.

Go for something comfortable to walk in — sneakers or light loafers work well. And if you're expecting rain: shoes that dry quickly or are water-resistant are ideal.
