When to spring clean?

Just before spring starts and when can feel the weather beginning to warm up is the perfect time to prepare your wardrobe for the new season. But before you haul out your winter clothing and bring in your lighter and brighter summer items, we recommend analysing your current winter wardrobe and think about what you are going to keep, reuse or give away.

An easy way to do this is to identify items that you have not worn in the past few months. Very often, we keep certain items of clothing for emotional or sentimental reasons, or because we paid a lot for them, even though we never wear them. Everyone has such items in their wardrobe and eliminating them, will free up more space in your cupboard, simplify the getting dressed process in the mornings, and will provide someone who is in need with a much-wanted piece of clothing.

If you have any items that need to be repaired or dry cleaned, do it now! If you can’t see yourself wasting the time and effort repairing something or having it dry cleaned, think about giving that item away as it is probably just taking up space.

How to store your winter clothing?

When you are ready to pack away your winter clothing, make sure that you store it in an appropriate container. Suitcases, plastic storage boxes, or vacuum-sealed bags are great for storing out of season clothing. To prevent mold, yellowing, or rising damp from forming, try placing a few pieces of cedarwood in the containers. Try and avoid using mothballs as these tend to create an unpleasant smell on clothing that is difficult to get rid of.

Once your wardrobe is basically empty, take the opportunity to give it a good dusting, wipe down and vacuum. You would be amazed at the amount of dirt and grime that can accumulate in your cupboard over the months and your wardrobe will look and feel much better after a good cleaning.

Before placing your summer clothing into your wardrobe, make sure that all the surfaces have dried fully beforehand.

If you have been meaning to change the way you store things in your wardrobe, now is the ideal time to make this change! For example, investing in a few storage boxes for loose items could free up a lot of space and keep them somewhere you know they won’t go missing.

Scarves have been very much in fashion over the past year or so but they can be tricky to store. A special scarf hangar can free up some valuable real estate in your wardrobe and will keep your scarves in one central place where you can quickly have access to them when getting dressed.

An organiser for your shoes can also free up a lot of space and can make things look much neater. The same can be said about jewelry and there are some great, streamlined solutions that are now available for storing your jewelry neatly and centrally.

If space is at a premium in your cupboard, you might want to consider investing in a few space-saving hangers. These hangers are able to hold several items at once and each component of the hanger will cascade down in a compact way when hung up in your wardrobe.

If you have a lot of handbags, think about whether or not you are storing them properly. Don’t leave them at the bottom of your cupboard but rather keep them in a sturdy box or storage container in a place that you can simply grab one when getting ready in the morning.

As you start filling your wardrobe with your summer items, now is a good time to conduct a critical analysis by identifying which items you didn’t even wear last spring and summer. Perhaps some items of clothing have gone out of fashion, or maybe some of them don’t fit as well anymore? It could also be that you simply don’t like certain items anymore but have been holding onto them in the hopes that you would change your mind. If this is the case, rather donate them or give them to someone you know would appreciate them.

When you are packing in your spring and summer clothing, you should also think about whether or not you have everything you need for the coming season, or if there are some accessories or pieces of clothing that you need to buy.

With the space you have gained from eliminating all the old, out of date and ill-fitting clothing, you will now have the space for new things and it is the perfect excuse to go on a shopping spree!

Fbo has everything you need for the coming spring and summer season and we offer world-class, international brand name clothing at very reasonable prices from our brand outlets and our online store

Of course, we understand that many people are on a tight budget and cannot afford to revamp their wardrobes entirely. If this is the case for you, you could always buy a few key accessories to update your summer wardrobe. It is amazing how a simple summer scarf, a chunky necklace or a trendy handbag can sproose up an outfit!
