What is POWER DRESSING and how can it help you when going back to work?

Will you be starting a new job soon? Or are you perhaps aiming for a promotion and want to do anything you can to secure it. Either way, did you know that the way you dress at work can hugely impact the impression you make?

This is known as ‘power dressing’ and it refers to a way of dressing that sends the message that you are competent, confident and authoritative. Knowing how to dress to make a positive impact is very important in the corporate world as it can affect your chance of anything from getting a salary increase to being offered a sought-after promotion.

Even if you don’t feel particularly confident or powerful, the way you dress can help you to “fake it ‘til you make it” and allow you to feel subconsciously better equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

Women in the corporate world have traditionally not been treated as equal to their male counterparts, but recent trends have seen a change in this view. Women are now seen as being as strong as men, and as a force to be reckoned with in their own right.

How do you power dress and how can this help you when going back to work?

The good news is that power dressing is not particularly complicated, and it is quite simple to find your own, unique way to dress for success.

If you consider that anyone in a managerial position needs to lead by example and make a good impression for the company, it will make sense that the post will always be filled by someone who dresses neatly, professionally and smartly at all times. A person who wears clothes that show too much flesh and who consistently dresses inappropriately, is not likely to be promoted by their company.

Get Power Dressing Clothing at fbo

Here at fbo, we stock a beautiful range of corporate clothing that will help you to power dress your way to success.

When shopping for your corporate wardrobe, we recommend that you carefully select the items and aim for a “mix and match” wardrobe to maximize your selection of outfits. For example, a simple, black pencil skirt and a pair of tailored trousers are both a great start. You could supplement them with a blazer, a few smart blouses and a pair of court shoes.

With a few key pieces of clothing in neutral colours, you can easily build a foundation for your corporate wardrobe. Whenever you have extra money or when the seasons change, you could add a blouse or two, another pair of shoes, a jacket and a few accessories.

When it comes to power dressing, it is important to understand that less is more. This means that it is less about trying to stand out and dress in a flashy way, and more about sticking to the basics and making a statement in an understated, yet powerful way.

If you want to make a positive impact, dressing smartly and professionally is key. Avoid loud and bright colours, sheer fabrics, showing too much flesh and wearing outfits that are too figure-hugging. People will be more likely to take you seriously if you opt for neutral colours, crease-proof fabrics and clothing that fits you well.

Just because you are power dressing, it does not mean you can’t accessorise! Dainty jewellery that matches and enhances your outfit can help to pull it together and give you your own unique style. Think about investing in some pretty necklaces, studs and bracelets to make your outfit pop in an understated way.
